Mont Saint-Michel
About an hour and a half west of Caen, on the northern coast, is Mont Saint-Michel. This
is a medieval monastery and town situated on a rock which becomes separated from land at
high tide (supposedly). Although it is very touristy, it is very impressive none-the-less.
Just as we arrived, the siren indicated tide change sounded, so we decided to walk out to
the water's edge to see the incoming tide in motion. After walking and walking and walking
and walking, we found the water. The fourth picture shows us looking back at Mont Saint-Michel
from the water.
Inside the city walls, one narrow, steep, stone road winds its way uphill to the abbey at
the very top. The buildings are all tourist shops and restaurants, now, but there is a small
population that still lives inside the city.
